The ACU offers an attractive addition and/or alternative to conventional underground mine cooling technologies. It is placed underground close to the location where cooling is required, thus enabling mining in areas that would otherwise be inaccessible due to high temperatures. It is a robust, modular and mobile low maintenance unit.

The efficiency of the vapor compression heat pump cycle, is comparable to that of surface refrigeration plants.
The ACU [patent nr.: 2007/04679] extracts heat from the ventilation air and transfers it to either chilled or service water. The fact that service water can be used as a heat sink means that in many cases, there is no need (or a reduced need) for a surface refrigeration plant. The heat can simply be discharged into the atmosphere via a cooling tower. This has a profound impact on the total capital and operational cost requirement.
Furthermore, since the water temperature increase through the unit is much larger than that of conventional cooling cars, the water flow rate required is significantly reduced, thereby drastically reducing the water pumping power requirement.
